Summer in the City: NYC Tech Scene Update

30 June, 2016

The NYC tech scene is hotter than ever this summer! The creation of the New York Tech Alliance, the reinvigorated buzz around the Silicon Alley vs. Silicon Valley debate along with up and coming tech companies setting up shop in the island’s top tech neighborhoods – it’s bound to be a big summer in the Big Apple. Here’s what you need to know:

New York Tech Meetup and New York Technology Council Join Forces
Welcome the New York Tech Alliance (NYCTA) to the NYC tech scene! New York Tech Meetup and New York Technology Council have formerly partnered to create the new non-profit organization on a mission to improve the tech ecosystem in the Big Apple. With over 60,000 members, NYCTA is the region’s largest and most effective tech group.

Regulars of NYTECH and NYTM’s programming need not to fear. Normal operations for both groups will continue under the NYCTA umbrella. Make sure to join your fellow NYC techies at one of the upcoming events: http://www.nytech.org/events.php.

The Age Old Silicon Valley vs. Silicon Alley Debate Heats Up
We know, we know. You’ve probably heard this story too many times, but hear us out. A recent report from the Partnership for New York City in association with Deloitte has some of the biggest names in tech (GE, IBM, well-known VCs) to believe NYC has staying power as a leading city of innovation.

NYC is currently considered the #2 technology market behind Silicon Valley, however, some leaders in the tech space are taking note of NYC’s advantages over its West Coast rival. Notably:

  • Offers an environment that makes it easy for corporate giants to communicate with the startup world
  • NYC corporations are adding startup investment arms
  • Silicon Valley is all tech, all the time. With that being said, NYC offers a more diverse mix of industries (finance, media, fashion, and of course tech) at a time where tech is increasingly playing a role in each industry.
  • Young workers, arguably the life force of many tech startups, want to be in metro areas and NYC’s cultural offerings cannot be beat.

Welcome to the neighborhood!
NYI has long been a proud member of the Lower Manhattan community since we opened our doors in 1996 and a lot has changed since then. Long gone are the days where the only people you’d find south of Chambers Street are those in finance. Today, some of the most innovative and promising tech companies are moving into the neighborhood.

Built in NYC just profiled the top neighborhoods for tech in the city and FiDi is high on the list! Recently funded tech companies including Namely, LifeBEAM, Sisense, Olo and x.ai all call FiDi home. Want to check it out? Schedule a tour of our 100 William Street facility and see for yourself.
